About
Nick James is a musician, composer, and visual artist based in Asheville, North Carolina, recording as We can rebuild him. He is the sole writer, producer, and performer behind the project, composing out of his handbuilt studio, Dad's Basement. His music hits with the weight of a full orchestra and the energy of cinematic rock; rhythmically driven, gritty analog at its core, mostly instrumental, and mixed visceral and loud.
Nick has a full-time corporate design job to support his family. Before that, he spent fifteen years racing bikes and breaking bones. Before that, he studied art. And before any of that, he was releasing his first records. It's been a long road back to making music, but the work he's putting out now is the most ambitious and personal thing he's ever done.
His life has been shaped by significant personal loss, and that weight runs through everything he makes. But the music isn't all bleak; there's defiance in it, and warmth, and something that keeps pushing forward. He lives with his partner and four kids, who he credits with both interrupting and inspiring in roughly equal measure.
The first We can rebuild him. EP, Six Dollar Man, arrives later this year. The album, Doped, follows in 2027.
